About 80 children from 60 vulnerable families in Jurong Central will now also get to benefit from the Adopt-A-Precinct programme after its expansion to two Jurong Central precincts was launched on Sunday (Jun 14).

About 80 children from 60 vulnerable families in Jurong Central will now also get to benefit from the Adopt-A-Precinct programme after its expansion to two Jurong Central precincts was launched on Sunday (Jun 14).
The programme will include hands-on enrichment activities for children as well as interaction with youth volunteers, who will serve as role models to the children. Families will also get to take part in workshops conducted by ITE College West volunteers to learn simple handyman skills.
At least 100 youth volunteers from the Singapore Science Centre and ITE College West have committed about 50 volunteer hours each.
Children can also look forward to enrichment programmes at the Singapore Science Centre during their school holidays as well as learning journeys to heritage and cultural areas, organised by volunteers from General Electric Singapore.
"We will not only boost the confidence of our children but also build their knowledge and their interest in science and technology, as well as history and culture, which are very important and stand them in a very good stead to do well in life," said Mayor of South West District Low Yen Ling.
“More importantly, these 80 children from 60 vulnerable families will be able to learn from our youth volunteers who have a heart to serve and make a difference in the community.”
The programme hopes to enrich the lives of vulnerable families through activities that address healthcare, social wellness, home safety and improvement, as well as education and enrichment.
Adopt-A-Precinct is an initiative started in 2012 by the South West Community Development Council to engage lower middle-income families living in one- to three-room flats. 160 needy families have benefitted from 34 activities, by 18 corporate and community partners, under the initiative since it was launched.
