A new facility aimed at helping people with disabilities to live and work independently was officially opened by Social and Family Development Minister Tan Chuan-Jin on Tuesday morning (Oct 6).

The facility, called Tech Able, is located within the Enabling Village in Lengkok Bahru and is the first of its kind in Singapore. It houses two centres - the Singtel Enabling Innovation Centre and the ST Engineering Enabling Technology Centre.

At the Innovation Centre, people with disabilities can get training and employment opportunities. The centre will offer customised training in communications and technology, such as in the area of contact centre operations, as well as online and social marketing.

It will also serve as a space to seed and support collaborations among different professional interest groups, such as therapists, researchers and people with disabilities.

The Technology Centre will focus on assistive technology. There will be a team of specialists on site to assess users' needs, recommend and facilitate the trying out of suitable assistive devices, as well as provide advice on subsidies and the purchase of equipment.

It is hoped that with this support, those with disabilities and their caregivers can make better informed decisions on assistive devices.

Tech Able is supported by donors such as the Community Chest, Care and Share Movement, Singtel and ST Engineering, as well as grants from the Infocomm Development Authority of Singapore (IDA).

Ms Jacqueline Poh, managing director of IDA, said: “People with disabilities, from children to seniors, face lifelong challenges, not for a lack of intelligence or ability, but a lack of training, education or access to the tools and technology that limits their futures.

"With the infocomm and assistive technology offered by Tech Able, they will be able to counter obstacles related to their disabilities, integrate into mainstream society and realise their full potential in our Smart Nation.”
