Chiam's MPS spot was the only viable site, says Sitoh

By Tessa Wong, The Straits Times, 8 Oct 2012

POTONG Pasir MP Sitoh Yih Pin said yesterday that the void deck where his predecessor Chiam See Tong used to hold his Meet-the-People Sessions has to make way for a wellness centre, because surrounding blocks are unsuitable.

The volunteer welfare organisation that runs the wellness centre, Wan Min Community Services, thus had no choice but to settle on Block 108, he added.

He was replying to a question from Potong Pasir resident Chia Shang Ming, 24, a civil servant.

Mr Chia asked Mr Sitoh to explain what was going on at Block 108, Potong Pasir Avenue 1, following last week's media reports on the matter.

Mr Sitoh said Wan Min approached him last year for help in identifying a space within a nine-block precinct.

Wan Min sought a space in the precinct of Blocks 101 to 109.

Three of the blocks do not have void decks, three others house a kindergarten, a residents' committee centre and a provision shop. Two more cannot be replaced as the void deck of one is earmarked for a covered linkway while that of the other has an unsuitable shape for a facility.

This left Block 108, which Mr Sitoh said has been unused by residents since last year's general election.

Still, Non-Constituency MP Lina Chiam has tabled a question for the next sitting of Parliament on whether town councils and MPs can approve specific uses of community spaces such as void decks.

Yesterday morning, Mr Sitoh and Health Minister Gan Kim Yong bumped into the Chiams during a tour of the ward.

The two groups chatted for five minutes and spoke about Mr Chiam's health.

At yesterday's dialogue, residents also asked about sports facilities.

Mr Sitoh said St Andrew's Village would open one of its football fields to the public on weekends, and also allow swimming classes in its pool.
