Japan honours Jayakumar for bilateral contributions

Former senior minister S. Jayakumar meeting former British prime minister John Major after both of them were conferred the Grand Cordon of the Order of the Rising Sun by the Emperor of Japan at the Imperial Palace in Tokyo yesterday. They were among 10 distinguished recipients of the award.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs said Professor Jayakumar has known Mr Major since his days as foreign minister.

The award was presented to Professor Jayakumar in recognition of his contributions to strengthening bilateral ties in the political, economic and cultural spheres, according to a statement by the Japanese Embassy in Singapore.

Prof Jayakumar is the fourth Singaporean to receive the prestigious award.

Emeritus Senior Minister Goh Chok Tong was honoured with the same award in 2011, while former prime minister Lee Kuan Yew and former ambassador to Japan Lim Chin Beng are previous recipients.
