GE2015: No word to describe how shocking some opposition proposals are, says Shanmugam

By Tan Weizhen, TODAY, 9 Sep 2015

Even as Foreign Affairs and Law Minister K Shanmugam described the past nine days as a good, satisfying and interesting campaign for the People’s Action Party (PAP) team standing in Nee Soon Group Representation Constituency, he again called on the opposition to be honest, and give specifics on how their proposals are going to be funded.

Speaking at a press briefing this afternoon (Sept 9) with the other four Nee Soon candidates, he said that he is confident the team has done its best over the past nine days.

“We have spoken with thousands of residents, they know we have tried..we’ve solved a large number of things that can be solved. It’s been a good campaign, a satisfying, interesting campaign.”

When asked whether the quality of the opposition has improved over the past 27 years he’s been in parliament, Mr Shanmugam reiterated that the opposition has to be honest in communicating their proposals.

He also expressed his ‘shock’ at some proposals other parties have come up with, such as suggesting that the Ministry of Health comes under the Ministry of Defence.

“I don’t know what words to express my shock. I can’t find a respectful word to describe these proposals.”

Mr Shanmugam also again challenged the Workers Party (WP) to clarify its stance on foreign manpower growth once and for all. He noted that WP candidate Gerald Giam has said that SMEs are suffering after the Government tightened the inflow of foreign workers, in what Mr Shanmugam said was the latest in a series of flip flops by the WP on the issue of foreign workers.

Friends, this Friday when you vote, I humbly ask for your support. We have a strong team with a good mix of talent,...
