More than S$100,000 in bursaries were given out to around 500 students living in Bishan-Toa Payoh GRC on Sunday (Jan 18).

Defence Minister Ng Eng Hen, who is also MP for the area, gave the assurance that no student should suffer in their studies because their family cannot afford it.

Dr Ng also urged residents to alert their MPs if they know of students who are suffering because their families had run into financial difficulty. The constituency's Citizens' Consultative Committee had given out S$1 million in bursaries in the last five years.

“The amount ranged from S$100 to S$400, S$500 to S$5,000 for the scholarships,” said Dr Ng. “But I promise you this again. If we need to give more, we will find the money to give. We will do our part; students must do their part to work hard. Parents must do their part to take care of their children and encourage them to work hard. And when they succeed, they can give back to society.

The GRC Community Scholarships for tertiary students were introduced in 2011.
