Project FRESH: Home makeover for seniors

Channel NewsAsia, 23 Jun 2014

Some 300 residents had a home makeover on Monday (23 June), thanks to a grassroots initiative by Tanglin-Cairnhill Citizens' Consultative Committee to fix and refurbish seniors' homes.

Most of these residents are the elderly living alone in rental blocks.

Volunteers helped to clean and wash their houses. Other improvement works include the fixing of furniture for the residents.

"Project FRESH" is a programme which brings together various help schemes. This includes installing energy-saving light bulbs and eradicating bed bugs at seniors' homes.

The initiative will be rolled out to six rental flats in the Tanglin-Cairnhill Division.

1,900 households are expected to benefit from the programme.

Senior Minister of State for Law and Education, Indranee Rajah, said: "What's very important is a sense of community, and community helping each other."

"For the elderly, many of them are very independent. They are very appreciative, it's just that physically they are older, frail and are not able to do many of these tasks themselves," added Ms Indranee, who is also an MP for Tanjong Pagar GRC.
