FIVE construction firms were charged in court yesterday with breaking employment laws.
JK Integrated, Ng Brothers Scaffolding, Shanghai Tunnel Engineering, Shanghai Tunnel Engineering (Singapore) and Straits Construction face 179 charges in total under the Employment Act, the Ministry of Manpower said yesterday.
Alleged offences include not paying workers on time, not granting paid leave their workers were entitled to, making unauthorised deductions and denying daily-rated staff of paid annual leave and public holidays.
China-based Shanghai Tunnel Engineering and its Singapore subsidiary Shanghai Tunnel Engineering (Singapore) face 82 charges in total.
Both were involved in several Land Transport Authority MRT projects.
The Manpower Ministry said the cases involving the five firms have been adjourned till later this month and next.
The ministry also said it will step up checks in the construction sector, and warned firms to obey labour laws.
"(Employers) must fulfil their legal obligations, and ensure that employees are given their statutory benefits under Singapore's employment laws... We will take action against companies that flout or disregard our employment laws," it said.

The ministry urged workers to blow the whistle on errant firms by calling its confidential hotline on 6438-5122.
