Fly your flag and be proud of Singapore

AS A "foreign talent" work pass holder for the past four years, National Day is always interesting to me ("Fly the flag proudly for Singapore on National Day"; last Saturday).

Singaporeans should be proud of their flag and country. Tha nation has come such a long way in a very short period of time. This does not happen by chance but through hard work and planning by the Government and the people.

From my experience when speaking with Singaporeans while at work, playing sports or in a pub, they seem reluctant to associate themselves with national pride and especially the Government.

Whether one agrees with the policies of the Government or not, nobody can refute what it has helped to build here.

As an American, I am proud of my country and fly my flag with great pride. It took hard work to build our country too. When Americans live outside the country, seeing the Stars and Stripes can evoke strong feelings of home instantly.

We foreigners appreciate Singapore for everything that it is - and its people should, too.

Nationalism is what binds a country, no matter who is in charge of the government.

To all Singaporeans, enjoy your National Day!
