Singapore's civil service not perfect but good and functioning: Tan Chuan-Jin

The Straits Times, 5 Apr 2014

The civil service in Singapore might not be perfect, but it is a good and functioning one, said Acting Minister for Manpower Tan Chuan-Jin in a Facebook post on Friday.

"There are things and areas we can improve on. And we also have individuals who may not be up to scratch. But we are not in a bad shape," he wrote.

Mr Tan said that the civil service is delivering "what many aren't able to" and that it would continue to improve. "Where we fall short, we will rectify," he added.

Mr Tan's comments come after several corruption scandals involving public officers. In February, a senior anti-graft officer was jailed for 10 years for embezzling $1.76 million and using part of it to feed his gambling habit.

In his Facebook post, Mr Tan also recognised the people in the public service who soldier on because they believe that doing so matters. He noted the many officers he had worked with who "care and try their best".

"To all of you who serve in the public service, heads up, chin up. Stay the course. This is a calling and it matters. More than we think," he said.
