The Singapore Civil Defence Force's elite rescue team was honoured on Monday for its life-saving operations at the recent East Village Hotel fire, and the Downtown Line Bugis station accident.

The Disaster Assistance and Rescue Team (DART) received the Minister of Home Affairs National Day Team Award.

Lieutenant Colonel Alan Toh, SCDF Disaster Assistance and Rescue Team, said: "In the East Village fire, we were asked to set up two water jets and attack the fire from the front of the hotel. We were told the front of the foyer was not safe at all, but there were no questions asked. We knew we had to do the job. We set up the jet and we moved in."

At the Bugis accident, DART officers raced against time to locate and retrieve the bodies of two workers trapped in wet cement.

The operation required wading waist deep in wet cement for hours, and some rescuers suffered chemical burns.

For their bravery and tenacity under fire, the unit took a team award and a well-deserved round of applause at the Home Team's National Day Observance Ceremony.

S Iswaran, Second Minister for Home Affairs, said: "These officers are representative of the men and women in the Home Team who are dedicated to keeping their fellow Singaporeans safe and secure, even at risk to themselves."

Lieutenant Colonel Alan Toh said: "The unit has come a long way since its formation in 1993 and the guys are really awesome. They're very passionate about what they do."

Lieutenant Colonel Toh added that the award will only spur them on to work harder.
